Expect a very slow and dangerous evening drive for almost all of southern New England this evening.
Initial band of very light snow is working in from the SW as the storm system is just now taking shape. We will be in good shape for the next few hours with periods of light snow and flurries. As the storm gets to the coastline it will begin to intensify and steadier and heavier snow bands will begin to develop between 3 - 8PM thus making a mess of the evening commute.
This next round of snow most certainly is going to slow the evening commute on Tuesday and require additional plowing and shoveling.
One storm down...another one on the way. High pressure is sending another abnormally cold airmass into New England today...temps aren't going to rise much regardless of the ample sunshine. Winds will be fierce as well gusting close to 30 mph creating windchill values in the teens. With fresh snow on the ground, a clear sky and diminishing wind tonight's lows will drop into the single digits for most!
There is no avoiding it now - snow is coming - our biggest storm of this young winter season is on the way.
It may be quiet now but it won't be over the weekend. Winter Storm Watches are now up from the NWS for Saturday night and Sunday morning. A weak cold front will slide in this afternoon with a flurry but more importantly it will thoroughly establish the arctic air here in New England. This will set the table for our weekend storm leading to lots of snow. The trend over the last 24 hours is for an increase in moisture and while the mid-levels still aren't that impressive the upper levels (jet-stream level) all of a sudden is much more favorable for generating lift and therefore precip.
Last winter left a battered and bruised coastline that in some areas was completely rearranged.
There is a snow storm coming this weekend, but the good news is it will not be a major event.
An Arctic airmass is settling into New England and will really establish itself over the next couple of days leading up to a weekend storm. Temps will struggle to get into the mid 20s today and upper 20s tomorrow before backing off again on Saturday into the mid 20s again.

In New England, we are accustomed to measuring each storm by the amount of snow it will drop, but the true measure of a storm should encompass more than just snowfall amounts, it should measure how the upcoming storm is going to IMPACT you.
Hard to believe with temps in the mid 50s right now that later tonight most will experience their first taste of Winter...but it true.
The pattern is turning more active and at first will be mild but over the weekend the cold will win out. With temps climbing to around 50 degrees for the next 36 hours there is no concern for ice or snow. There isn't much forcing for ample moisture right now so we are looking at just some spotty showers and pockets of drizzle through later tonight. However, tomorrow a cold front will slide into the area and rain intensity will pick up.
It doesn't feel like Summer but it certainly is better than the deep freeze we've been in over the last 10 days. The pattern has flipped this week with the West getting slammed with cold and the East much milder. This pattern will hold all week-long before breaking down over the weekend.
Nothing to see here today but cold, cold and more cold. Gusty west winds aren't helping much either...windchills this afternoon will stay in the teens and lower 20s.
