The suspect was shot and killed by a responding officer who was at the mall on an unrelated call, police said.
The shooting took place at an Old National Bank branch in Louisville. Police said the gunman, 25, worked at the bank.
"We strongly believe there was going to be some other targets, including maybe family members, and one of the malls here in Nashville," said Nashville Police Chief John Drake.
