A native of the Lone Star State, he was born in Lewisville and raised two hours northeast in Paris. He holds a double-major bachelor's degree in English and Mass Communication from Ouachita Baptist University and a master's degree in mass communication from Stephen F. Austin State University.
Matthew began his career a week after graduating from college in 2016 at KWTX-TV in Waco, starting as a photojournalist and later becoming the station's digital content producer, while also associate-producing weekend evening newscasts.
In 2018, he moved to Greenville, South Carolina, becoming a multimedia producer at FOX Carolina. In 2021, Matthew moved to Charlotte, North Carolina, and worked at WCNC Charlotte for five years there as a digital producer and assignment desk editor. During his time in Charlotte, Matthew earned three consecutive regional Edward R. Murrow Awards for team digital coverage.
In his decade-long career, Matthew has covered local-focused beats including education, technology, LGBTQ communities, and crime and court proceedings. Major stories he has covered include the deadly boiler room explosion in Gatesville, Texas; the passing of South Carolina native and beloved actor Chadwick Boseman; a student's Title IX case in Charlotte, and Hurricane Helene's impact in western North Carolina.
