Israel, Saudis work to establish diplomacy

A delegation from Saudi Arabia is in the Israeli-occupied West Bank on Wednesday, a day after officials met with Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas in Ramallah. Israel's tourism minister also made an official public visit to Saudi Arabia as the two countries have been discussing efforts to establish diplomatic ties. Steven Simon, a professor of Middle Eastern studies at the University of Washington, joined CBS News to discuss the possible history at stake with the meetings.

Biden, Netanyahu talk "democratic values"

President Biden met with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu Wednesday in New York as protests continue in Israel over Netanyahu's proposed court overhauls that many critics call a threat to the country's democracy. Speaking to reporters before the meeting, with Netanyahu by his side, Biden said the two would discuss, "upholding democratic values that lie at the heart of our partnership, including the checks and balances in our systems." Israel's judicial overhaul fuels upheaval

The reaction to Israel's judicial overhaul has for months been loud, and at times chaotic, but that did not stop the country's right-wing government from approving the first phase of the plan Monday. The law limits the ability of Israel's Supreme Court to overturn government decisions, and public response has only intensified since Monday's vote.
