Report: CIA considered killing Assange

After a major intelligence leak, the CIA looked into the possibility of abducting or even assassinating WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange, according to an investigation by Yahoo News. Yahoo New chief investigative correspondent Michael Isikoff, who co-wrote the story, spoke with Anne-Marie Green and Vladimir Duthiers on CBSN about what interviews with 30 former U.S. intelligence and national security officials revealed. They also discussed the response from former Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, who was CIA director at the time.

CIA worried about al Qaeda reconstitution

CIA Deputy Director David Cohen said the pullout from Afghanistan has left the agency with very limited intelligence-gathering capabilities and he fears that al Qaeda could reconstitute itself in as little as a year. Gina Haspel has been tapped to replace CIA director Mike Pompeo as leader of the agency, after President Trump fired Secretary of State Rex Tillerson and named Pompeo his successor. If confirmed, Haspel will be the first female director of the CIA, but there is some controversy surrounding her nomination. Michael Morell is a former acting director of the CIA and a CBS News senior national security contributor. He joins CBSN to discuss the changes, and what Haspel's leadership will mean for the agency.

Reports: U.S. paid to recover stolen documents

The U.S. intelligence community reportedly paid thousands of dollars in an attempt to recover stolen NSA documents from Russian operatives. The U.S. "secretly negotiated" with Russians to purchase the documents, and the Russians then offered to sell them material regarding President Trump, The Intercept reported Friday. The New York Times later ran a related story. The Intercept's James Risen joinS CBSN to discuss the story, which the CIA has denied.
