Hawthorne-based SpaceX is scheduled to launch the Falcon 9 rocket carrying the RADARSAT Constellation Wednesday morning during a launch window that opens at 7:17 a.m. and try to recover the rocket with a landing back at Vandenberg Air Force Base.
It exploded during ground testing at Cape Canaveral on April 20. SpaceX remains hopeful it can use the Crew Dragon Capsule to launch two NASA astronauts to the space station this year.
The Crew Dragon's successful mission Friday means the first piloted flight of the spacecraft could take place as soon as July. The U.S. has not launched astronauts into space since the space shuttle program was retired in 2011.
Hawthorne-based SpaceX successfully launched a rocket Thursday from Cape Canaveral carrying three payloads, including a lunar lander that could make Israel the fourth country to ever deposit a spacecraft on the moon.
Instead, SpaceX will be moving rocket-building operations to Texas.
SpaceX announced on Friday that the Hawthorne-based company is laying off 10 percent of its workforce.
The two-mile test tunnel is the first of what Musk hopes will be many to alleviate L.A.'s traffic issues.
The Falcon 9 rocket lifted off at 10:32 a.m. from Vandenberg on a "ridesharing" mission to carry 64 satellites into orbit. The launch has been postponed three times.
