PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - The Philadelphia Eagles on Monday exercised DeVonta Smith's fifth-year option and agreed to a three-year contract extension with the wide receiver.

The Eagles did not release the contract's financials, but according to NFL Media, the extension is for three years, with $75 million and $51 million guaranteed. The extension will pay Smith about $25 million per season and keep him in Philadelphia through at least the 2028 season.

The wideout is the fourth Eagle to receive a contract extension this offseason, joining Landon Dickerson, Jake Elliott and Reed Blankenship.

DeVonta Smith's historic start with Eagles

Smith was drafted 10th overall out of the University of Alabama in 2021 after the Eagles traded up with the Dallas Cowboys.

In his first three seasons, Smith is off to the best start of any wideout in Eagles history, with 240 catches for 3,178 yards and 19 touchdowns.

The 25-year-old has the most catches and receiving yards by an Eagle in their first three seasons in the NFL. He's also tied with DeSean Jackson and Mike Quick as the only receivers to have two 1,000-yard seasons in their first three years.

Smith's 19 TD catches are the fourth most in franchise history by any player in their first three years.

Last season, Smith caught 81 of 112 targets for 1,066 yards and seven TDs.

Will Smith's extension impact A.J. Brown's contract?

For the past two seasons, Smith has teamed up with A.J. Brown to give the Eagles one of the best wide receiver duos in the NFL.

Brown, in his first two seasons with the Birds, has the third-most receiving yards (2,952) and sixth-most receiving TDs (18) in the league. Brown broke an NFL record with the Eagles in 2023, becoming the first wideout to record at least 125 receiving yards in six straight games.

The 26-year-old Brown has three years left on a four-year, $100 million contract extension he signed with the Eagles in 2022 after Philadelphia acquired him from the Tennessee Titans. The catch? Brown doesn't have any guaranteed salary after the 2024 season. He has $21 million guaranteed in 2024.

Smith's extension gives him the same amount of average per year (APY) as Brown at $25 million.

A decision on Brown's contract is on the horizon, whether it's this offseason, next or the year after.
