2 dead, 2 wounded in shooting at Newark recording studio, Essex County Prosecutor says
An active police investigation was underway in New Jersey following a deadly shooting inside a music video recording studio in Newark.
Essex County Prosecutor Theodore Stephens II confirmed two people were killed and two others were wounded at around 8 p.m. Wednesday at Platinum Sound NJ at 790 Clinton Ave., in the latest round of gun violence to rock the state's largest city.
Namir Bynum, 20, was pronounced dead at the scene and Osayuwamen Uyamu, 20, died at the hospital, Stephens said at a news conference Thursday morning.
Two other men were hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries from the shooting, including one who was released, Stephens said.
The news conference was initially scheduled to provide an update on a separate shooting investigation.
"Unfortunately, last night, the city of Newark experienced additional traumas," Stephens said. "When it comes to public safety and law enforcement, sometimes we feel like we've taken one step forward and we take two steps back. That's just the nature of this business."
Stephens said music studios should face scrutiny.
"So the city of Newark, I think, is going to look at policing and perhaps regulating those institutions where some of that activity may go on," Stephens said.
There was no word on a possible motive for the shooting.
Stephens said the investigation was still "active and ongoing" and that he could not share any more details at this time.
Heavy police presence
Members of the prosecutor's office's Crime Scene Investigation Bureau were on the scene for several hours and the street remained blocked off due to a heavy police presence.
Investigators were seen going in and out of Platinum Sound NJ, which Stephens said is used to record music videos. CBS News New York called the studio, but did not get a response.
A man who works nearby said he was stunned to hear what had happened.
"The place is usually quiet. I haven't seen really no traffic [going] in or out," Newark resident Byron Foster said. "You hear a little music sometimes, but nothing ... You don't see anyone hanging out in front. I don't know anyone around here so whoever got ... I wouldn't know."
CBS News New York is still working to find out the details and circumstances surrounding the shooting.
November mass shooting update
Hours before dozens of officers swarmed Clinton Avenue, Newark prosecutors announced they had an important update in another shooting investigation.
Sources said police took four people into custody on Wednesday in connection with November's mass shooting outside a liquor store on Chancellor Avenue.
Jordan Garcia, 10, Kiyah Mae Scott, 21, and Masi Rogers, 19, were killed and two people were wounded in the shooting, which was captured on surveillance video.
