The Mackinac Bridge Authority is reminding visitors that Canadian cash will no longer be accepted for tolls, effective Oct. 1.
One of the most recognizable figures at the Mackinac Bridge, beside the bridge itself, is retiring Saturday.
According to the Mackinac Bridge Authority, the bridge is closed to all vehicles except passenger cars, passenger vans and empty pickup trucks.
The Mackinac Bridge Authority started selling pieces of the original deck grating, as it is getting replaced, and a piece of it has made it all the way to the South Pole.
When conditions improve, the bridge will reopen to all vehicles, although certain vehicles may still require an escort, the authority said.
Construction on the 5-mile bridge began on May 7, 1954, according to the Mackinac Bridge Authority. It is the fifth largest suspension bridge in the world.
