Prosecutors said William Zientek lured Dr. Olga Duchon to his home in Barrington on Sunday on the grounds of having a face-to-face talk.
Police said the suspected attacker escaped, but was later found dead nearby.
He was taken to Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center in critical condition.
