The man exited his car outside the Kingsbury Plaza luxury high-rise apartment building, at Grand Avenue and Kingsbury Street, when two men came up and demanded his property at gunpoint.
Police said the violent and bold manner in which the smash-and-grab was conducted is not at all common for the area.
A person with a knife forced the victim into a car, sexually assaulted him, and then stole from him, police say.
