After a brief fight, the deputy told the unarmed man that she was going to shoot him several times. The man responded by saying "shoot," after which the deputy fired two rounds.
Several Westlake High School students were injured after a vehicle crashed into them as they were leaving school.
The freeway was closed for about two hours before authorities allowed traffic to flow through again.
According to LAPD, the victim was shot in the head near Highland Avenue and Hollywood Boulevard.
The Riverside County Sheriff's Department said the shooting happened near River Road and Eagle Crest Court in Perris.
