As more countries report cases of the COVID-19 Omicron variant, scientists in the U.S. are analyzing tens of thousands of virus samples, looking for the new strain.
"It is likely that this is not an isolated case, meaning that there is ongoing community spread of the Omicron variant in NYC," New York City Health Commissioner Dr. Dave Chokshi wrote on Twitter.
The White House released a new plan early Thursday morning to fight the Omicron variant, as the U.S. joined about two dozen other countries with confirmed cases.
A person in California became the first in the U.S. to have an identified case of the omicron variant of COVID-19, U.S. officials said on Wednesday. It comes as scientists continue to study the risks posed by the new strain of the virus.
The U.S. imposed new restrictions on travel from eight southern African countries late last week.
