Devils Sign Defenseman Ben Loveyjoy, Re-Sign Smith-Pelly

NEWARK, N.J. (CBSNewYork) -- The New Jersey Devils have signed defenseman Ben Lovejoy, the team announced Friday.

The three-year deal is worth $8 million.

An eight-year veteran, Lovejoy, 32, was a member of the Pittsburgh Penguins' Stanley Cup championship team this past season. In 66 games, he had four goals and six assists and plus-minus of 9. He began his career with Pittsburgh before being traded to the Anaheim Ducks during the 2012-13 season and then back to Pittsburgh two years later.

Lovejoy's best season came with Anaheim in 2013-14, when he had five goals, 13 assists and plus-21 rating

The Devils were in the market for a defenseman after trading Adam Larsson to Edmonton this week for Taylor Hall.

New Jersey also announced it has re-signed right winger Devante Smith-Pelly to a two-year, $2.6 million contract. He was acquired in a trade with Montreal in February. In 64 games with the Canadiens and Devils last season, Smith-Pelly had 14 points and 11 assists.

The Devils also re-signed forward Beau Bennett and defenseman Jon Merrill.
