5-Alarm Fire Tears Through Several Newark Homes
NEWARK, N.J. (1010 WINS/AP) -- A fire is now under control in Newark after it tore through and damaged at least seven buildings on a residential block.
Authorities say the five alarm fire broke out shortly before 1:30 p.m. Wednesday in an abandoned building at South 20th and Ferdinand streets, about two miles west of the downtown area. The blaze was brought under control around 3:30 p.m.
Hot weather and low water pressure hampered the firefighting efforts. Two buildings have burned to the ground, and five nearby homes have been damaged.
Fire department spokesman John Brown said about a dozen firefighters, working in 90-degree temperatures, have been treated for heat-related injuries.
Only two of the homes were occupied and everyone was able to get out without injury, 1010 WINS' Steve Sandberg reports.
Fire officials have not determined the cause.
