Budget deal

Congressional leaders and the White House have reached a tentative agreement that would lift the debt ceiling through March 2017 and increase spending caps for the next two fiscal years, according to sources familiar with the negotiations.

Doctor is in

A new CBS News/New York Times national poll shows retired neurosurgeon Ben Carson has overtaken Donald Trump and now has a slight lead among registered Republican primary voters. Carson's support has quadrupled since August and he's made gains across many key Republican groups, including a reversal of fortunes with one particular set of voters.

Carson's faith

Donald Trump over the weekend seemed to question rival Ben Carson's religion, but voters so far seem to like Carson's faith-based values. Many see him as a principled outsider. While there is some wariness of his Seventh Day Adventist faith, social conservatives in particular are finding some similarities in their own beliefs.

Chris Christie

New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie sits in 11th place in this morning's CBS News/New York Times poll; a long way from the other blunt-talking presidential candidate from the northeast, Donald Trump. The governor and his wife, Mary Pat, invited CBS News to their home to talk about family, gun control and tough competition on the campaign trail.

Toxic waste

There is growing fear in a suburban St. Louis community over a local landfill containing nuclear waste left over from the Cold War. The radioactive material was dumped there illegally in the 1970s, but now there's a "hot spot" burning underground in a second landfill, just three football fields away.

1st responders

Plane crash victims are thanking a helicopter crew from CBS station WFOR in Miami for coming to the rescue. The copter pilot spotted the downed plane in Broward County and the news team landed and checked on the victims before rescuers arrived. We get an inside look at the moments after the crash.

Fantasy addiction

With bettors wagering billions of dollars on the outcome of daily fantasy sports games, Gamblers Anonymous is considering whether to officially advise its members to avoid the contests.
