Nearly 200 people are looking for homes after being evicted from the backstretch at Hawthorne Race Course.
Lauren Bryant works a part-time job and holds not one, but two degrees. But she is now even exploring the thought of living in a nursing home.
The hotel where the unhoused group was moved is right across the street from the Elgin Math and Science Academy.
"Whether it's taking leases that they probably should not because they cannot financially sustain it or we see people who are not doubling up with others, that is not a real safe situation."
"Buses aren't meant to be slept in."
The homes should be completed by next spring. Habitat For Humanity is still seeking volunteers later this month.
The program is open to low-income homeowners at least 30 days behind on payments.
