Moments after the ceremony, neighbors made their way to the community walk.
CBS 2's Jackie Kostek reports from Highland Park where a number of events are taking place to remember those killed last July 4th and how the community is honoring lives lost as well as reclaiming the space.
Once again, it is hard to count the number of times, a service closes with "Amazing Grace" on the bagpipe.
"This morning we remember those who were murdered and those whose lives were forever altered," Mayor Nancy Roetering said.
Mayor Nancy Roetering told reporters in the moments before marking the moment of the mass shooting that "evil doesn't win and this is our parade route and our community taking our parade route back."
The Brewers are Cooper's favorite baseball team, and his favorite player, Christian Yelich, caught the first pitch at American Family Field.
Cooper Roberts, the boy who was paralyzed from the waist down in the July 4 mass shooting in Highland Park last year, threw out the first pitch at the Cubs game against the Brewers in Milwaukee on Monday.
The seven victims' names were read aloud as individual candles were placed near the church altar.

Highland Park is preparing for the one-year remembrance of the mass shooting that killed seven people, and injured dozens more, at the July 4th Parade. The hope now is that by reclaiming the town, and its parade route, the city can continue its journey to heal.
