A high school in suburban Oak Park made history by teaching Black history. Oak Park and River Forest High School was the first in the state to offer the new Advanced Placement (AP) African American Studies course.
CBS 2 is kicking off a new segment to show off the best of what Chicago area schools have to offer.
The student government president said the entire community encourages whatever they want to do in the future.
"It is completely life-changing for him."
"Something you put all of this effort into and then you don't get anything back out of it. It was sad not being able to do it."
"It's gonna taste real, real good. And that's why all the seniors keep coming back. Because it tastes good!"
"I really hope and pray that we never have another war like that one."
"This is just a terrible ending to an amazing season."
It's unclear whether any students were disciplined for this body-piercing operation.
Officers found forceps, disinfectants, and an array of different gauges and piercing jewelry. The department said it is difficult for school resource officers to police restrooms due to privacy reasons.
A few of the schools include Wilberforce University in Ohio, the University of Miami in Florida, and Xavier University of Louisiana.
"It's going to be a cool experience, something you dream of as a little kid. Seeing myself develop to become one of those guys to have their name called on Sunday is going to be a real blessing."
The funny thing is they won the title after going head to head with a school they know well: rival Buffalo Grove.
"That moment was monumental for me. (It) let me know that I can get to where I want to be if I put the work in. That is my ultimate goal."
"I was blessed that I had mentors that stepped up in my life to help guide me."
A group of teens, who would be the first in their families to go to college, checked out some of their options on Thursday. CBS 2's Sara Machi caught up with them at a Lake Forest company.
"It's great that I can end my high school career on such a high note."
A GoFundMe page set up for the family said he played basketball for Thornridge High School.
He and his mother said they don't want this now viral video, seen more than two million times, to take away from his accomplishments and the dedication he has for wrestling.
Freshman year of high school is not easy. A Chicago nonprofit understands it can be especially tough for young Black and brown students. That's why it's paring up teens with the support system they need to reach new heights. CBS 2's Noel Brennan had the story.
