DJ, a 2-year-old Pocket bully, has been a member of the Bates family since this past summer.
The puppy was out on a walk with a family member just after midnight early Friday when he was taken at gunpoint by three armed men.
Dolle also lost his wife in February.
Police say the victim was walking her French bulldog when an unknown suspect approached her from behind, displayed a firearm, and demanded her dog.
Zambrano said Scott is now being held against his will by someone who claimed he wanted to help watch the dog when he moved in.
