A winter storm may be on the way, but you'd never know it if you were outside Friday.
A historic and powerful Nor'easter will lash New England this afternoon through early Sunday. The most significant threat remains tree and power line damage from heavy, wet snow and strong winds. A secondary threat would be the potential for minor to moderate coastal flooding, particularly during the high tide overnight around 2AM.

Talk about a Super Sunday! So nice outside. In fact this is the warmest we have been since January 2nd when we reached 51 degrees. Nice to finally thaw a bit. Highs today will climb to 40 to 46 degrees in the sunshine and diminishing wind behind our departing low whose low pressure has dropped down to 981 mb over Nova Scotia.
A solid .50"-1" of rain is likely and this water will easily be absorbed by the snow pack to only become heavier and add more stress to the rooftops. As the storm deepens over us tonight and pulls away, a change over to snow will occur mainly after midnight..with northern New England having the best chance of any substantial snowfall. SNH could see 1-2" with N. MA a coating to an 1" at best as the storm departs.
Crews are now racing to make room for more snow in Boston.
Arctic air is on the move today. The Arctic front currently in Northern New England will push off the coast this afternoon. Ocean effect snowshowers for the Outer Cape could provide some minor accumulations...D-2". Significant cold air will settle into the region overnight with clear skies and diminishing wind. Lows drop to 0 at the coast to -20 to -25 in NW sheltered valleys. Many suburbs outside Boston drop down to -5 to -15 by dawn tomorrow

Unitil, the public utility that took heat for leaving many ratepayers in the cold after the 2008 ice storm in north central Massachusetts, is advising customers in that area to prepare for ice-rated power outages tomorrow.
High pressure parked over the Ohio Valley is steering in cold dry weather from Canada. Plenty of Sunshine today with highs in the Upper 20's and Lwr 30's. An Arctic front pushes through tonight and the real cold air gets on the move. Arctic air will settle in after midnight with clear skies and calm winds. Lows will drop below zero in interior valleys while hover near 10 degrees at the coast.
Just like in a basketball game, suddenly this winter has gone on the offensive and is going into a full court press. You may not know it yet..but the weather is starting to line up for plenty of cold with the chance for a few snowstorms before the month is through.
Colder air will wait until tonight to finally push in. Plenty of low clouds and fog this morning. Visibilities are gradually starting to improve after a very murky start. Scattered light showers and sprinkles have been pushing through from time to time. Temps have started in the 40's...and that is just about where they will remain today
Heavy Snow and Wind will lash New England in a powerful winter storm late Sunday Afternoon through Monday. Over a foot of snow is possible in many areas with peak winds gusting over 60 mph at the coast.
The week that was in forecasting is gone now. What we are left with is high confidence of a storm tracking far enough off the coast to have little impact for our region. In fact, I am calling for a great weekend...but also cautious to see if this storm has any more tricks up it's sleeve.
