Out-of-town photojournalist recounts being arrested during DNC protest in Chicago

Megan De Mar is a member of the CBS News Chicago Investigators team, focusing on topical investigative stories.
De Mar came to CBS News Chicago in October 2018 from ABC7 Eyewitness News. Prior to Chicago, she worked at WEWS-TV in Cleveland and WNDU-TV in South Bend, Indiana.

De Mar also won a Regional Emmy Award in 2017 for her reporting on a now-convicted serial killer who confessed his crimes to De Mar in a series of letters from prison.
De Mar earned a Master of Science in Journalism degree from Northwestern University's Medill School of Journalism. De Mar also earned a bachelor's degree from Georgetown University. De Mar is a graduate of Fenwick High School in Oak Park.
A Hinsdale native, De Mar enjoys spending time with her large Chicago-area family. Her hobbies include singing and playing music, competing in triathlons and sampling the best sushi spots in the area.

On Friday, Chicago Police Supt. Larry Snelling said there were a total of 74 arrests over the four days of the convention, and most of those happened on Tuesday when a smaller group of protesters clashed with police for a few hours.
Police say in each of the robberies. a dark blue Land Rover Discovery with IL plate DJ87261 drove up to the victims, and two men exited the vehicle armed with a handgun.
"We had a group that showed up, and they showed up with the intent on committing acts of violence and vandalism. That was their intent," Chicago Police Supt. Larry Snelling said

A total of 700 guns were stolen from roughly 35,000 car break-ins in 2023 alone.

Police said the five victims ranged in age from 21 to 62 years old.
The tent city between the Dan Ryan Expressway and the 1100 block of South Desplaines Street has existed for several years.
"None of the accused members stated that they had knowledge that the Oath Keepers were a violent extremist group nor did they state that they had intentions of joining a violent extremist group," CPD leaders said.
"We are here to say emphatically, this is enough. It's enough. When this reckless violence ravages across our city at this magnitude, we are losing a piece of the soul of Chicago," Mayor Brandon Johnson said.
The victim suffered trauma to the body while handling the firework and died at the scene.
