California recall election underway

Early in-person voting in California's recall election began in parts of the state this weekend. Democratic Governor Gavin Newsom is fighting to keep his seat following backlash from Republicans over pandemic-related shutdowns. Challenging state bans on school mask mandates

The Department of Education's Office of Civil Rights says five states' bans on school mask mandates may violate the civil rights of students with disabilities. Meanwhile, the House of Representatives' January 6 commission is preparing to request the phone records of hundreds of people related to the U.S. Capitol attack. Biden speaks on COVID vaccines, nursing homes

President Biden announced Wednesday that nursing homes must require staff be vaccinated in order to qualify for Medicare and Medicaid funding. He also said the federal government would step in to fund schools if GOP governors cut payments to punish them for mask mandates.
