"It doesn't matter what you say. One week, two weeks, three weeks — you've got to go with what the situation on the ground is," Fauci said.
For a presidency, addressing a pandemic is as much an issue of public communication as it is of public health.
"To everyone who has left New York over the last few days: Because of the rate of the number of cases, you may have been exposed before you left New York," said Dr. Deborah Birx.
"When you're dealing with the White House, sometimes you have to say things one, two, three, four times, and then it happens. So, I'm going to keep pushing," Fauci said.
In Italy, the epicenter of the coronavirus pandemic, the number of reported cases has surpassed 50,000, with more than 4,800 deaths.
