Runaway garbage truck slams into Stowe Township home
STOWE TOWNSHIP (KDKA) -- A home's security cam captured video of a runaway garbage truck that caused plenty of property damage in Stowe Township.
Neighbors woke up to a startling sound Wednesday morning when a garbage truck came crashing into their homes.
The truck came sliding and screeching down a hill, destroying front yards and damaging homes. Now, neighbors are facing thousands of dollars in repairs.
"About 6-6:15 [a.m.], me and my daughter were sleeping," Kim Solerto, one of the homeowners, said. "We heard a crash, it sounded like an explosion. I opened my front door and all I could see was a garbage truck."
Security video from a neighbor's Nest cam shows the truck tire trying to grip the ground on 13th Street.
The video shows the driver chasing after the truck, but he stops as the brakes apparently give way and the truck plows into parked cars and slams into two homes.
Solerto said she was still speechless as her cars were getting towed.
"I was shocked. I couldn't believe it happened," Solerto said. "Nobody thinks this is going to happen to them. All three cars were totaled probably."
She said the driver was apologetic.
"They said the emergency brake was on, but they don't know if it slipped out or something else failed," Solerto said.
The fact nobody was hurt is a blessing.
"Thank God," she said. "This can all be replaced, so it's okay. It's going to be okay."
Solerto and her neighbors said they will now turn to insurance to help get their homes to former glory.
Police are still looking into the specifics of how the crash happened.
