One firefighter remained in critical condition and four others were listed in serious condition Monday night. A total of eight firefighters were hurt battling the fire, officials said.
A fire quickly spread through the first floor in a home on 189th Street in the Auburndale section of Queens just after 4:30 on Sunday morning, killing one and leaving another seriously injured.
"We had fire in four buildings throughout this operation," said FDNY Chief Ron Spadafora.
"One side of the scaffold started to slip very fast. I don't know what happened or why. It just started to slip very fast," said Anmar Mohammed of Astoria.
