Time Out New York Kids: Art, Imagination & More For Mother's Day Weekend
NEW YORK (CBS 2) – With a beautiful weekend on the agenda for the Tri-State, Time Out New York Kids has some great suggestions for the family.
CBS 2's Cindy Hsu speaks with Mary Squillace about some events perfect for the kids.
1. Festival of Ideas
Where: New Museum of Contemporary Art
235 Bowery (at Prince St)
When: Saturday, May 7 – 11 a.m.
Description: Four days of art exhibits, lectures and workshops take over lower Manhattan during the New Museum-sponsored festival; Saturday's green street fest is the best bet for families. Outside the museum on the Bowery, kids will find eco-focused products, cooking demonstrations, rooftop gardening classes and bike tours. Children can also play in a version of the David Rockwell-designed Imagination Playground, make a smoothie on Cafe Habana's bicycle-powered blender and learn about the critters and plants that inhabit the cove of Brooklyn Bridge Park. All ages.
2. Uncle Rock Mother's Day Extravaganza
Where: 92YTribeca
200 Hudson St (at Canal St)
When: Sunday, May 8 – 11 a.m.
Tickets: $15, children under 2 free
Description: Let Uncle Rock (Robert Burke Warren, former bassist of the late-'70s group the Fleshtones) do what his name implies: get your kids moving to his country-infused rockabilly tunes. Today, kids will hear original songs from The Big Picture, which pays tribute to the likes of David Bowie, the Rolling Stones and Johnny Cash, in a special Mother's Day concert. All ages.
3. Imagination Movers
Where: Best Buy Theatre
Broadway (at 44th St)
When: Saturday, May 7; Sunday, May 8 – 1:30 p.m., 4:30 p.m.
Tickets: $29.50-$49.50
Description: The kid-friendly rock band with the hit Disney Channel television show swings into NYC for a stop on its nationwide tour In a Big Warehouse. Aside from the fabulous jump-suit-wearing foursome, little ones can keep their eyes peeled for some of the show's other characters-Nina and Warehouse Mouse among them. The audience can expect a lot of participation, helping to solve the Idea Emergency, dancing the sprinkler or the robot and even interacting with the show's stars as they come into the audience to mingle. Ages 2 to 10.
