2 dead, 4 wounded in Paterson, N.J. shooting on Mother's Day
Two people are dead and four people were wounded after a shooting Sunday night in Paterson, New Jersey, prosecutors said.
Paterson police responded to the incident just before 8:30 p.m. outside a liquor store at Rosa Parks Boulevard and Godwin Avenue. They found six people with gunshot wounds.
The victims were transported to the hospital. A 43-year-old man and a 29-year-old woman were pronounced dead. The other four people are stable, according to the Passaic County Prosecutor's Office.
"He didn't deserve to die like this at all"
The cousin of one of the victims spoke with CBS News New York Monday.
"He didn't deserve to die like this at all. We are hurt right now. On behalf of the family, we are hurt," Tshon Wells said.
Sources tell CBS News New York investigators believe this was a drive-by shooting. The victims were standing outside a liquor store when they were shot. It's unclear if they were the intended targets.
The Passaic County Prosecutor's Office has not released any information about a possible motive. People who live in the area say that corner is dangerous, and is well known for drug and gang activity.
The mother one of the survivors of the shooting spoke about her son's injuries.
"Yes, he was shot in each leg. They had to do surgery because the bullet went in and went up. It could have went to his heart," she said.
She said graphic video was posted online showing the aftermath of the shooting. She said her other son was assaulted and arrested by police after, she says, he was trying to help his injured brother.
"He was trying to check on his brother that was bleeding on the ground," she said.
"It's unacceptable"
Councilman Alex Mendez was at the scene after the shooting.
"This city is not safe at all. It's unacceptable," Mendez said. "Every other week, we're getting a shooting."
Mayor Andre Sayegh called it a "senseless act of gun violence."
"While we have made meaningful progress, with shootings down 60% over the last two years and gun violence victims down 66%, any act of gun violence is one too many," he said.
