NYPD officials detail security efforts for the 2026 TCS New York City Marathon
New York Police Department Commissioner Jessica Tisch and other executives discussed security efforts ahead of the 2026 TCS New York City Marathon.
The 50th annual race is set for Sunday, with tens of thousands of runners expected to participate.
Tisch said the city's Joint Operations Center will be fully activated with all city, state and federal partners. Staff will be monitoring cameras located along the parade route and looking at social media for any threats.
Response units will be deployed citywide to investigate any reports in real time, she said.
"Cops will be out there to keep you safe, but we ask everyone to stay alert. If you see something, please say something," Tisch said.
Security measures will also include bag inspections in marathon-viewing areas. Prohibited items include coolers, chairs, umbrellas, oversized bags and all weapons. The use of drones is also prohibited.
NYPD's drone team will also be activated.
Tisch urged New Yorkers to adhere to the numerous street and bridge closures. Drivers should expect rolling closures and heavy delays.
Residents and visitors are encouraged to use public transportation to get around.
New York Road Runner, the nonprofit that is behind the marathon, is painting the blue line Wednesday, which marks the official race route.
On Sunday, participants will start in waves between 8 and 11:30 a.m. and travel 26.2 miles from Staten Island, through the five boroughs and into Manhattan, where they will finish in Central Park.
