NEW YORK -- A wintry mix of snow and freezing rain fell Thursday morning across New York, New Jersey and Connecticut.

The storm created icy conditions for the morning commute, prompting several area schools to close or have delayed openings.

New York City Public Schools stayed open as scheduled, but alternate side parking rules were suspended for the day. Families should always check with their schools for the latest updates.

The National Weather Service issued winter weather advisories for much of the Tri-State Area from 4 a.m. to 1 p.m.

While the snow totals were not much for everyone, there was enough to create a slick layer on streets and sidewalks. Drivers were urged to slow down and stay off the roads, if possible.

"The freezing rain and sleet is the biggest concern. So they might not see snow out there and they think everything's fine, but it's very slippery," the New York City Department of Sanitation's Acting Commissioner Javier Lojan told CBS News New York earlier in the morning. "Take it nice and slow on the roads and also on the walkways."

As of 11 a.m., there were more than 600 flight cancellations or delays at New York City's three major airports. Nearly 6,000 customers were without power across the area, with the most outages reported by PSE&G New Jersey.

How much snow did we get?

Forecasters predicted a general trace to 3 inches, with a trace likely well south of the city, and upwards of 3 inches toward the Catskills. In between, anywhere from a coating to an inch or two was expected.

Early snow totals show 2 inches for Highland in Ulster County, New York, followed by 1.8 inches for New Fairfield, Connecticut and 1 inch for Elizabeth, New Jersey.

Long Island recorded .8 inches in Islip Terrace, and Central Park saw half an inch.

More snow already on the way

We have a few more chances for winter storms over the next seven to 10 days. Another snow/rain mix arrives Saturday afternoon, then turns over to rain by early Sunday morning. We expect a dry Super Bowl Sunday.

After that, another system will likely impact the area next Tuesday night into Wednesday, and the early call for that storm is all snow, but we'll update accordingly.
