Long Island Man Wanted In Wife's Murder Found Upstate

PAWLING, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) -- A man wanted in connection with his wife's murder is in custody following a standoff with state troopers in upstate New York.

Paul Leitgeb, 49, was armed with a box cutter and threatening to harm himself and police when he was found in a densely wooded area near the Appalachian Trail in Pawling on Tuesday afternoon, New York State Police said in a press release.

The retired New York City transit officer was taken into custody after a "prolonged" standoff with troopers, police said.

Suffolk County Police detectives took Leitgib to Mid-Hudson Regional Hospital in Poughkeepsie with self-inflicted lacerations.

Police had been looking for Leitgeb since his wife, 42-year-old Tricia Odierna, was found dead in her Lake Grove home last Thursday.

Relatives said Odierna was the loving mother of 7-year-old twins — Alicia and Jake — and had also taken in three nephews after the death of one of her sisters.
