For the first time since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic in March 2020, a Minnesota tradition is back at Lake Harriet. Its return, however, proved to be memorable, as it came alongside the coldest St. Patrick’s Day temperatures in a generation.
Even though this is the coldest St. Patrick's Day since 1993 in the Twin Cities, St. Paul is getting on with a busy weekend of events.
"It's part of our city's identity," Irish-American historian Jim Rogers said, "but it's odd because the last time the Irish were the largest foreign born ethnic group in St. Paul was the 1850 census."
The Minnesota Department of Public Safety says they're cracking down on drunk driving, and there will be extra law enforcement in downtown St. Paul all day Friday and through the weekend.
"March Madness is my favorite time of year. St Patrick's Day just starting March Madness is like a cherry on top," said Redmon Wallace. "You don't have many perfect days in the world. Today's a perfect day."
It's St. Patrick's Day, and the luck of the Irish will once again be flowing through the Twin Cities.
