Hockey Fans Cheer Team USA At Blaine's Herb Brooks Center

Saturday's Olympic hockey match-up between Team USA and Russia had many thinking back 34 years ago to the "Miracle on Ice" game at Lake Placid. So it was only fitting that a viewing party was held at the Herb Brooks Training Center at the Schwan's Super Rink in Blaine, with dozens of hockey fans in attendance. "You get to see the best players," said fan Brian Maloney. "It's fun to watch them play the Russians with all the history and stuff."

Authorities said everyone made it out safely but a home in the north Twin Cities metro suffered extensive damage in a fire early Thursday morning. Fire crews were called to the 2000 block of 120th Avenue Northeast in Blaine at about 12:30 a.m.

A 44-year-old Ramsey man is accused of criminal sexual conduct involving several children after he mentored them through the "Big Brothers" organization in the north Twin Cities metro, according to charges filed by the Anoka County attorney.

Super Bowl Ref, Blaine-Native Jerry Seeman Dies

Former NFL supervisor of officials Jerry Seeman, who worked as the chief referee in two Super Bowls, has died after a long bout with cancer at age 77. Seeman died Sunday at his home in Blaine, Minn., league spokesman Greg Aiello confirmed Monday. The St. Paul Pioneer Press first reported the death of Seeman, who was an NFL game official from 1975 to 1990, including 12 seasons as a lead referee. Seeman moved to the league office in 1991 and served 10 years as the supervisor of officials until his retirement. "Jerry modernized and improved NFL officiating during his 10 seasons leading the department," Commissioner Roger Goodell said in a statement distributed by the league. "He was very proud of being a football official, and he always made the NFL proud through his skill, integrity, and professionalism."

Police in Blaine say that a woman they believe robbed a TCF Bank last month has been apprehended in California. The bank, which was located inside a Cub Foods along Central Avenue Northeast, was robbed on Oct. 23.

Anoka Co. Armed Robbery Spree Ends With Bite From K-9 Cop

Three suspects are in police custody, and one is recovering from injuries sustained from a K-9 officer, after a robbery spree in Anoka County Thursday night. According to Blaine Police, officers from multiple law enforcement agencies responded to three separate reports of armed robberies in the area between 11:00 p.m. and 11:30 p.m. The first report was on the 1000 block of County Road 10 in Spring Lake Park, the second was near Able Street Northeast and 87th Lane Northeast in Blaine and the third was on the 1100 block of 95th Avenue Northeast, also in Blaine. Descriptions from witnesses about the suspects, their vehicle and weapon (a shotgun or rifle) tied all three crimes together.

Authorities in Blaine are looking for a woman who is suspected of robbing a bank inside a grocery store on Wednesday and hope a clear surveillance photo can help lead to her arrest. Blaine Police responded to the incident at about 5:25 p.m. at the TCF Bank inside the Cub Foods on the 12000 block of Central Avenue NE.

Charges: Duo Steals Nearly $40K Worth Of High-End Eyeglass Frames

Police said two people were caught with nearly $40,000 worth of stolen high-end eyeglass frames earlier this month, after allegedly stealing from multiple Twin Cities businesses. Beverly Sanchez Jara, 38, with an unknown address, and 27-year-old Hector Astudillo, of an unknown address, were each charged with one count of theft (more than $5,000), and one count of aiding and abetting receiving stolen property (more than $5,000).

One person was killed Monday night after a car rear-ended a Metro Transit bus in the north Twin Cities metro, according to the Anoka County Sheriff's Office. Authorities responded to the area of Highway 65 and 89th Avenue NE in Blaine at about 5:38 p.m. Monday on a report of a three-vehicle crash.

Pernice Jr. Wins 3M Championship

Tom Pernice Jr. birdied the final two holes Sunday for a one-stroke victory over Jeff Sluman and Corey Pavin in the 3M Championship. Pernice finished with a 4-under 68 and had a 17-under 199 total at the TPC Twin Cities for his second career Champions Tour victory. He also has two PGA Tour victories. Sluman closed with a 62, and Pavin had a 66.

Tom Pernice Jr. Leads 3M Championship

Tom Pernice Jr. moved into position Saturday for his second Champions Tour title, shooting a 7-under 65 to take a two-stroke lead over Tom Kite in the 3M Championship. Pernice had a 13-under 131 total at TPC Twin Cities after opening with a 66. The two-time PGA Tour winner had four straight birdies on the front nine, and added two more on Nos. 10 and 12. After making a 40-foot bogey putt on the 14th hole, he birdied Nos. 15 and 18. The 53-year-old Pernice, playing in the tournament for the first time, on the 2009 SAS Championship for his lone senior title.

Haitian Team, Brought To Minn. By Hometown Pro, Take 2nd At Schwann's USA Cup

An international soccer team that's overcome incredible odds gets to bring home some hardware for a job well done. A team called "Haitian Initiative", composed of young athletes from Haiti, played their way into the Championship game at Saturday night's Schwann's USA Cup. They were the runner's up. The team was able to travel from the Caribbean with the help of retired soccer pro Tony Sanneh, who's originally from Minnesota. Fifteen-thousand players from around the world came to the week-long soccer tournament in Blaine.

This week, youth soccer players from 17 countries, and all over the nation, take to the fields at the National Sports Center in Blaine as part of the Schwan's USA Cup – the largest soccer tournament in the western hemisphere. Though the heat has been oppressive, there are still nearly 25,000 people in attendance.
