Striking auto workers say there is some progress to report, in their talks with Ford - one of the three Detroit automakers impacted by their walkout now entering its third day. Economists say a long and expanded strike could lead to higher car prices.
Thousands of employees at plants in Michigan, Missouri and Ohio launched a historic work stoppage against Detroit's Big Three automakers.
The union is asking for a 40% pay hike, a shorter week for workers, and the return of pension plans for hourly employees. CBS 2's Sabrina Franza reports from the Ford plant in South Deering.
So far the walkouts have been limited to a Ford factory in Michigan, a GM plant in Missouri, and a Stellantis complex in Ohio.
The UAW is asking for up to a 40% raise from Ford, GM, and Stellantis, the company that makes Chrysler, Jeep, Dodge, and Ram vehicles.
The clock was ticking Thursday night as the deadline for the country's big three car companies and the United Auto Workers union to reach a deal to avoid a strike was not far away.

On Saturday, Loretto Hospital workers held a rally as their strike entered a sixth day. Workers said they are understaffed, which creates unsafe conditions.
"We are facing an existential threat to what it means to be a working performer," actor Sean Astin said.
Their union, SEIU Healthcare Illinois, is calling for Loretto Hospital to pay a living wage.
According to union workers, the hospital has previously received citations from the state because of unsafe staffing numbers.

CBS 2's Andrew Ramos reports the current climate of understaffing, they said, is overwhelming workers. Another demand that workers are making is to make Juneteenth a permanent holiday.

Healthcare workers at Loretto Hospital on Chicagi's West Side hit the picket line Monday. Workers are demanding better pay and more staffing. CBS 2's Andrew Ramos reports from the hospital on the negotiations.
