Chicago Bears legend Steve "Mongo" McMichael has been posthumously diagnosed with CTE, his family announced Tuesday.
Dr. Chris Nowinski, chief executive officer of the Concussion Legacy Foundation, says research shows a far higher risk for ALS among NFL players, and suggests a link to CTE. Nowinski joins Marissa Perlman.
McMichael and a man told deputies that they had been drinking and arguing for hours.
McMichael played 13 seasons with the Bears from 1981 to 1993, and ranks second only to Richard Dent in team history with 92.5 sacks.

A spokesperson for the family of Chicago Bears legend Steve "Mongo" McMichael confirmed he will move into hospice care in Joliet.
The Hall-of-Famer has been battling ALS. The fundraiser Monday night is also intended to raise awareness about the disease.
Because of his ALS diagnosis, the Hall of Fame brought the celebration to McMichael's residence in outside Chicago.
McMichael could not be at the induction ceremony due to complications of the ALS he has been battling for the past three years.
Julius Peppers is also set to be inducted Saturday, while Steve McMichael will receive his gold jacket and bust at home. Matt Zahn reports from Canton, Ohio.

McMichael has been battling ALS, also known as Lou Gehrig's disease, since 2021.
"He is being prescribed an antibiotic and will be returning home tonight," McMichael's family said in a statement Wednesday afternoon.
During his stay at the hospital, it was discovered McMichael had a urinary tract infection, MRSA, and pneumonia.
McMichael was hospitalized with a urinary tract infection last week and was on three antibiotics, his family said.
The family adds that they hope to have him home on Tuesday with IV antibiotics.

McMichael, who played on the Super Bowl-winning 1985 Bears squad learned last week he would be inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame.
Bears fans may not have much to celebrate, but Devin Hester, Julius Peppers, and McMichael learned they're headed to the Pro Football Hall of Fame.
All three were announced as part of the 2024 Pro Football Hall of Fame class at the NFL Honors on Thursday night.
