A morning swim during hazardous conditions in Lake Michigan on Sunday turned into a dramatic, large-scale rescue that also put first responders in danger.
The victim was pulled to shore by the Chicago Fire Department dive teams.
CFD and relatives have identified him as 43-year-old Wilbert Hayes, who had been with the department since 2009.
Search efforts happened as north winds with 3-to-6-foot waves created dangerous rip currents in the area.
A 20-year-old woman has died, and six others were injured after a boat capsized near Navy Pier overnight. Police also confirmed a man's body was recovered unrelated to the boating incident during a media conference on Friday.
The Chicago Fire Department said rescue teams responded to a boat in distress on the lakefront near Olive Park.
According to police, the seven people were returning to shore when the boat possibly struck a break wall.

First responders performed CPR and rushed the person to Northwestern Memorial Hospital.

"Back then, there was quite a bit of money on the race, quite a bit of gambling, and so there were some thoughts about maybe those with influence maybe wanted to change the outcome in their favor."
The 333-mile race from Chicago to Mackinac Island, Michigan, is steeped in tradition, and it also runs in the family for a couple of sisters hoping to return the family name to sailing glory. CBS 2's Noel Brennan shares their story.
"In total darkness and zero visibility the victim was rescued by our dive team in cardiac arrest," Fire Department officials said in a tweet.
Firefighters rescued a kayaker who ran into trouble and ended up clinging to his boat about 3 miles offshore on Lake Michigan in far north suburban Winthrop Harbor on Sunday.
Crews were able to pull him out of the water and bring him to shore, where paramedics evaluated him and released him with no injuries.
