The robber was last seen leaving the scene heading southbound on Sacramento Boulevard in the victim's car.
The incident happened just before 6:30 p.m. Wednesday near Sacramento and Walton in the Humboldt Park neighborhood.
His family filed a federal lawsuit on Wednesday against the city and the five officers involved in the shootout, accusing police of using "brutally violent, militarized policing tactics."
The civil rights lawsuit filed by Reed's mother accuses police of using "brutally violent, militarized policing tactics" during a traffic stop on March 21.
Police said a man on a bike got into an argument with a driver and three passengers at the drive-thru, when he shot the driver.
A COPA news release issued Tuesday indicated that a seatbelt violation was the "purported" reason Reed was pulled over. But a letter issued April 1 expressed that COPA had doubts about this.
Reed's family also is calling on the Chicago Police Department to disband tactical units like the one involved in the traffic stop and shooting.
At the scene, multiple 9mm and rifle casings were found, and one innocent bystander's car was broadsided.
