The decision comes after 17-year-old Austin Metcalf died from injuries sustained during a stabbing at a meet Wednesday in Frisco. Karmelo Anthony, also 17, a student from Frisco Centennial High School, has been charged with murder.

Aiming to enhance safety

The new security protocols aim to enhance safety "while also giving the student-athletes their opportunity to participate in an event they have prepared for throughout the season," said Matt Wixon, a spokesman for Frisco ISD athletics.

"The safety of all involved is Frisco ISD's highest priority during this emotional time," Wixon said.

The district track meet was postponed following the stabbing.

Additional law enforcement

In correspondence with the news media, Wixon said:

  • Additional law enforcement officers from Little Elm and Frisco police departments will be present, alongside stadium security staff and school administration.
  • Bag checks will be required for all student-athletes, staff, spectators and media.
    • No camera bags or zoom lenses will be allowed, per the Little Elm ISD bag policy.
  • Metal detectors will be placed at all entrances.

Media allowed in the stands

No media passes will be issued.

"Members of the media will be allowed in the stands with spectators," Wixon said.

The media will not be given access to track and field areas, and no interviews of coaches or student-athletes will be permitted on the premises, he said.

District 11-5A includes high schools from Frisco ISD, including Centennial, Heritage, Memorial, Liberty, Emerson, Lebanon Trail, Frisco and Independence.

The event is scheduled to start at 9 a.m. Monday.
