For National Recovery Month, first responders help to fight stigmas attached to substance abuse

Sara Machi is a multi-skilled journalist (MSJ) at CBS News Chicago.
She started at CBS News Chicago in December, 2022 from KSDK in St Louis where she had been an MSJ since 2019.
Sara takes pride in generating lead stories. At KSDK she led a continuing education program in the newsroom.
Prior to St. Louis, Sara was weekend anchor and MSJ at WDBJ in Roanoke, Va., and had similar roles at KTBA in Shreveport, La. and at WOAY in West Virginia.
Sara earned a degree in journalism at the University of Missouri School of Journalism.
An Emmy-nominated journalist, over the years Sara has reported live from presidential inaugurations, immersed herself in local court and crime reporting, and prompted new legislation to keep kids safe.
She joins her sister in Chicago and is exploring the city, often with her dogs Jack and Fitz in tow. She'll happily field your story ideas, restaurant recommendations, and pet photos.

Nathaniel Huey Jr.'s criminal past should have been a red flag – including a court order banning him from possessing firearms.
Police said a vehicle connected to the suspect was found in Oklahoma where police attempted to stop him before a fiery crash.
The FBI confirmed they responded to the robbery, and said no injuries were reported.
"She was a silent sufferer. It's just not talked about. And honestly, our family didn't talk about this until it was our reality."
This year's joint celebration was the first the city has held since the pandemic pause.
Mayor Brandon Johnson described Ward as "a son, a brother, a friend, an uncle, a hero who put his service above himself."
They wanted to give them an overview of what to expect at the convention at the United Center in August 2024.
"We know that there is more bad news to come because we are in the process of removing the rubble," said Marilyn Diamond, honorary consul general for Morocco in Illinois.
Organizers said 70% of the success is reliant on something they can't control -- the weather.
This year, you can expect to see 35 vendors in for the three-day event.
"Our motto, that we've had since the beginning, is making hunger history," said Glen Ellyn Food Pantry executive director Laura Glaza.
"I'm not just standing up there teaching. They are teaching me a lot of stuff, too."
There is growing concern for safety along the lakefront now that Chicago beaches will no longer have lifeguards on duty, with the end of summer after Labor Day.
The residents said this was not the first time, as they told CBS 2's Sara Machi about the escalating problem.
