Border officials in Texas say they are seeing a sharp increase in migrant apprehensions, as many as 1,000 a day. To handle the surge, U.S. Customs and Border Protection officials have begun releasing migrants from detention with a "notice to appear" in court at a later date. It is a policy similar to the one the White House halted last year. Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen was at the border Thursday. Mireya Villarreal asked Nielsen about the apparent policy change.
Shelter-in-place order lifted near chemical facility
Authorities on Thursday lifted a shelter-in-place order hours after warning people to stay indoors because high levels of benzene were detected in the air near a scorched petrochemicals storage facility outside of Houston. Officials in Deer Park, Texas, said there was a sustained period of improved air quality readings in the area and lifted the order late Thursday morning.
