Alex Rodriguez hit a colossal home run, Curtis Granderson also connected and the New York Yankees got back on track with an 11-7 victory over the skidding Cleveland Indians in a game that quickly grew testy Friday night.
With Nick Swisher and Brett Gardner struggling, why shouldn't Joe Girardi turn to Chris Dickerson? The utility outfielder carries plenty of intangible qualities and could be just the spark the Yankees need.
As Kate Smith's recorded rendition of "God Bless America" swirled around an empty stadium last night, you had to wonder what would swirl through the mind of a former owner. Not just any owner, of course, but "The Boss" George M. Steinbrenner III.
Thursday night felt like it was going to be different because Sabathia was on the mound, but it wasn't. Sabathia has now faced Beckett three times this season. The Yankees have lost all three games.
The "Joba Rules" have been debated and dissected since Joba Chamberlain burst onto the Bronx scene in 2007. So now that he likely requires Tommy John surgery for a torn ligament in his right elbow, it had to be asked: Does Yankees general manager Brian Cashman regret how he handled his young hurler?
We all got tired of hearing about the Joba Rules, but the Yankees stuck with them. And in the end, Joba Chamberlain still got injured and needs Tommy John surgery. But don't think it means the Yankees are going to be any less careful with their pitching assets.
David Ortiz got more than even for getting drilled. Ortiz broke loose soon after CC Sabathia hit him with a pitch, starting and finishing a burst that led the Red Sox over the Yankees 8-3 early Friday. "Finally got hit," Ortiz said afterward in a short rant that included some profanity.
Only one day after going on the DL with what was purported to be a muscle strain of the flexor tendons attaching at the inner elbow (medial epicondylitis), a contrast MRI revealed that Joba Chamberlain has a ligament tear that will likely require Tommy John surgery.

Joba Chamberlain's dye contrast MRI has revealed torn ligament and the pitcher will likely need Tommy John surgery, ending his season with the Yankees.
Two of CC Sabathia's three losses this year have come against the Red Sox. Josh Beckett beat him both times. That's a scary thought for the Yankees, who have lost seven of eight meetings with Boston this season — including all five at home.
David Ortiz wasn't at all concerned about New York throwing at him in retaliation for Tuesday's showy bat flip. "Why should I?" he said Wednesday. "I don't care about what Joe Girardi said. I come to play the game every day. That's about it. I'm done with that."
When the Yankees needed a big effort Wednesday night, A.J. Burnett came up small. That's the way it has gone for them almost all season against the rival Red Sox.
Yankees setup man Joba Chamberlain joined his colleague, Rafael Soriano, on the DL yesterday. So what exactly is the issue?
Yogi Berra was reunited with a piece of baseball history on Wednesday when a collector presented him with a game-worn jersey. Big deal, you say?
