2 In Critical Condition, Several Others Hurt After House Fire In Queens
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- A bed-ridden elderly woman and her home health aide are critically injured after a fire in Queens.
Both were pulled out of the burning multi-family home by firefighters Saturday morning, CBS2's Magdalena Doris reported.
Investigators are assessing the damage and searching for the cause of the fire that ripped through the home on 31st Avenue early Saturday morning.
Firefighters worked to rescue seven people from the burning home, among them a 94-year-old, identified by neighbors simply as Marjorie, and her home health aide, who are both in critical condition.
Neighbors say Marjorie, who had been suffering from Alzheimer's for quite some time, was bed ridden and confined to her first floor apartment which is where fire officials say the flames started.
According to neighbors, the elderly woman's husband Henry, who was sleeping on the second floor, was able to get out.
"He was distraught, extremely distraught. He wanted to go to the hospital and be with his wife," neighbor Afraz Mohamed said. "We've all lived here for a while so we will rally around him."
The fire department also rescued a family who rents the third floor apartment. The family of four was found near a window in the back of the home trying to get air.
Majorie and her aide were taken to the burn unit at Weill Cornell Medical Center, 1010 WINS' Samantha Liebman reported.
At least one firefighter suffered minor injuries.
