Police: New York Man Kills Woman Before Turning Knife On Himself

WEST BABYLON, N.Y. (CBSNewYork)-- Police are investigating a homicide and attempted suicide at a home in West Babylon.

Police said a woman was found stabbed to death in an apartment on Sheffield Avenue. The suspect, who sources say tried to cut his own arm off, was caught inside the residence.

"He appeared to be suffering from self-inflicted wounds and he was immediately brought to the hospital for treatment," Suffolk County Police Commissioner Tim Sini said.

Police are calling it a deadly domestic dispute. The victim was identified as Sonja Williams. Two children live with the couple, but were not home during the brutal attack.

Police blocked several streets and at one point were searching for the children, who were fortunately safe in another location.

Residents told CBS2 the neighborhood is typically quiet.

"When I heard of all of this, I was afraid to even step out of my house. This is supposed to be a safe neighborhood," one resident told CBS2's Brian Conybeare.

"You never know what people are going through. What problems people have. What's going on behind closed doors," another said.

Suffolk County crime scene investigators are trying to piece together what led up to the murder.
