1 dead as fire engulfs multi-family home in Newark, New Jersey, officials say
A woman is dead and two people are critically injured after an early-morning fire ripped through a multi-family home Saturday in Newark, New Jersey.
The roaring fire at 282 Schley Street was lighting up the entire block when the Newark Fire Department arrived at around 3 a.m.
Video shows flames engulfing the second floor and roof of the home.
Some tenants said they had to escape through windows and climb to the roof to get to safety. They said they were trapped until firefighters arrived.
One woman inside said she had minutes, if not seconds, to react to the fast-moving fire.
"I did feel like a movie. It didn't feel like reality," she said. "It was crazy, you just had to get out of there. I don't know. The neighbors were screaming."
The fire was so strong that it burned off the siding of the home next door.
"Fire was pretty loud, woke me up," Frantz Lapointe said. "I just was happy I got out."
Lapointe said he alerted others to the fire.
"I ran to the back where the three other occupants are, and banged on doors and said, 'Hey, get out! Get out! Get out!" he told CBS News New York.
After the fire was put out, tenants were seen going inside to try and salvage what little they had left.
The Essex County Prosecutor's office said one woman was killed in the fire and two people were being treated for severe injuries at Newark Beth Israel Medical Center. The names of the victims have not been released at this time.
The cause of the fire is under investigation. The prosecutor's office urged anyone with information to call the confidential tips line at 1-877-TIPS-4EC or 1-877-847-7432.
