The CBS New York First Alert Weather team issued a Yellow Alert for potentially severe storms Sunday evening, especially in areas north and west of New York City.

Damaging wind gusts are the main threat, but we can't rule out small hail or an isolated tornado in the same areas northwest of NYC.

Sunday forecast

We're closing out the weekend on a much brighter and warmer note! Mostly to partly sunny skies will prevail in the afternoon with highs topping out in the low 70s inland.

The exception will be along the coast and Long Island where temperatures will be in the 60s. Winds won't be nearly as strong as yesterday, but gusts in the 20-25 mph range are still possible.

Sunday storm threat

Much of the daylight hours look dry. Some showers and thunderstorms will likely be in our far northwest counties as we head into the evening.

They will gradually sink southeastward into the night while also weakening. Areas north and west of NYC face a greater risk of strong-to-severe storms.

Damaging winds would be the main threat tonight, but not everyone will see that. The severe weather should fizzle before arriving closer to NYC.

7-day forecast

Any leftover showers exit quickly overnight, giving way to a beautiful Monday. Expect mostly sunny skies with temperatures in the 70s tomorrow!

The nice weather continues Tuesday before our next rain chance Wednesday. The second half of the week is looking cooler and unsettled.
