Times Square subway burn victim keeps changing his story, police say

Editor's Note 12/3: Police now say the man was, in fact, set on fire and they are looking for a person sought for questioning.

A man who suffered burns on a subway car as it approached Times Square early Monday morning keeps changing his story about what happened, the New York City Police Department said.

The incident happened just after 3 a.m. as a northbound 3 train approached the Times Square-42nd Street station in midtown Manhattan.

Police said the victim, an apparently homeless 55-year-old man, was asleep in the car when he suffered the burns.

The man got off the train at 42nd Street, and an MTA worker flagged down officers at the station.

The victim was rushed to the hospital and is expected to survive. He was treated for burns to his legs.

He initially told police someone set him on fire. After making that claim, however, police said the victim has since become uncooperative and has changed his story. Police no longer suspect any criminality is involved.

The Times Square transit hub is located between the Port Authority Bus Terminal and Bryant Park, and it also serves the 7, S and N/Q/R/W lines.
