Luigi Mangione's federal trial now set for Nov. 4, though another delay is possible

Luigi Mangione's federal interstate stalking trial has been pushed back to November. 

The move follows a delay in the start of his trial on state charges. 

Mangione faces both state and federal charges for the murder of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson back in December 2024. 

Wednesday, Mangione's state trial was pushed back until Sept. 8 of this year

Thursday, a federal court judge ordered jury selection to start on Oct. 13 of this year, with an eye towards starting the trial with opening statements on Nov. 4.

In addition, the judge ordered prosecutors keep certain dates clear in the event the federal trial is delayed yet again. In the event of a further delay, the judge wants all parties ready to begin jury selection on Jan. 5, 2027, and then for trial to begin somewhere between Jan. 25- Feb. 12.

The delays in the start of the state and federal trials came after Mangione's defense said they needed the extra time since they are defending him in multiple cases. 

federal charge against Mangione that carried the possibility of the death penalty has been dismissed. The remaining stalking charges against him carry the possibility of life in prison.

The state charges also carry a maximum penalty of life in prison. 

Thompson, 50, was gunned down on Dec. 4, 2024 while walking to a hotel in Midtown Manhattan for a conference. Authorities detailed certain phrased written on the ammunition that echo a phrase insurers use to avoid paying out claims.

Mangione was arrested at a McDonald's in Pennsylvania five days later. He also faces charges there for possession of an unlicensed gun and forgery.
