Judge now considering jail time for Long Island sleep center worker who admitted to secretly filming people in the bathroom
The former Long Island sleep center worker who pleaded guilty to secretly recording patients and co-workers in the bathroom will face sentencing later this month.
Sanjai Syamaprasad, who admitted to installing hidden cameras at a Northwell Health facility in Manhasset, was to be sentenced Wednesday to only probation and ordered to register as a sex offender, but the judge is now considering adding jail time. Syamaprasad will now learn his fate on Nov. 20.
Nassau County District Attorney Anne Donnelly had recommended Syamaprasad serve up to three years in prison, saying the case "deserved jail time."
"It was night after night after night, victim after victim after victim," Donnelly added.
Spy camera disguised as a smoke detector
Prosecutors said Syamaprasad, a Brooklyn father, installed Velcro dots in nine bathrooms at the Northwell Sleep Disorders and STARS Rehabilitation Center in Manhasset. He used the dots to position a spy camera disguised as a smoke detector so it could record people using the shower and toilet.
Police were alerted last year when he was caught watching the videos at work. Prosecutors seized more than 300 clips that recorded body parts of potentially hundreds of people, but they were only able to bring charges involving five victims, including a child.
"They have a complete fear wherever they are in private moments, in bathrooms, restaurants and hotels, that someone could be spying on them, someone could be recording them, [that] the recordings taken of them could be somewhere on the internet," said victims' attorney Joel Rubenstein, of firm German Rubenstein LLP.
One victim in court Wednesday called the situation "lifechanging," adding, "Your most intimate moments of using a restroom. You'd think that you have the security of using a bathroom -- and [someone is] watching you. You're in a medical facility."
Another victim told Syamaprasad in court, "You are a horrible person. I hope knowing how [you] messed up my life and trust in people will haunt you forever."
