George Washington Bridge traffic snarled after Cross Bronx Expressway debris fall injures 1

One person has been hospitalized after debris fell from a Cross Bronx Expressway overpass onto a car below.

It happened at around 7:50 a.m. on the Cross Bronx Expressway near Exit 1.

The person who was injured is expected to survive, and was awake and mobile when they were taken to the hospital.

New Jersey Gov. Mikie Sherrill posted on social media saying all westbound lanes to the lower level of the George Washington Bridge were closed.

Officials are investigating the incident and making repairs.

The incident has prompted a number of closures that motorists in the area should be aware of.

- The Major Deegan Expressway at Sedgwick Avenue in both directions

- The southbound Cross Bronx Expressway at the Major Deegan Expressway

- Harlem River Drive at the entrance to the George Washington Bridge

- Chase Ramp entrance to the George Washington Bridge

- Amsterdam Avenue entrance to the George Washington Bridge

Just last week, a large chunk of debris fell on the George Washington Bridge right in front of an oncoming vehicle. The vehicle narrowly avoided being directly under the debris as it fell, but still caused damage.
