12-year-old girl raped in Brooklyn after getting ambushed, NYPD says

Police have arrested a man in connection with the rape of a 12-year-old girl in a Brooklyn apartment building

Eric McMichael, 27, was taken into custody around 3:35 p.m. Friday and charged with rape, burglary, sexual abuse and endangering the welfare of a child. According to police, his listed address is in the Greenpoint section of Brooklyn.

Investigators said the child was ambushed by a stranger Thursday walking into the Cooper Park Houses, a public housing complex in the East Williamsburg neighborhood.

The attacker grabbed the girl and raped her in a stairwell before he fled the scene near Morgan Avenue and Skillman Avenue just before 6 p.m., according to the NYPD.

The girl was treated at a local hospital after the assault, according to police. She was reported to be in stable condition.

Residents of the Cooper Park Houses and neighbors said they're sickened and scared for the young rape victim's physical and emotional health.

"It should never have happened," Terrence Scott said before the suspect was arrested. "A person like that, you need to turn yourself in. You're sick, you're an animal. You need to turn yourself in."

Anyone with any information is asked to call the NYPD's Crime Stoppers hotline at 1-800-577-TIPS (8477), or for Spanish, 1-888-57-PISTA (74782). You can also submit a tip via their website or via DM on Twitter, @NYPDTips. All calls are kept confidential.
